Breathe new life into your sandwich this summer with these fresh and healthy sandwich tips.
Go Hearty – use multi-grain or sprouted wheat varieties of breads, pitas or tortillas. Feeling fresh? Try wrapping with lettuce or cabbage leaves instead. Best bets for secure wrapping are Boston leaf lettuce, or hearty cabbage.
Lay it on Thin – forget fatty mayonnaise and processed cheese. Try making a healthy Greek yogurt spread with fresh herbs, or choose hummus, mashed avocado, pesto, salsa, chutney, hot sauce, or tapenade. Try a spread of soft goat cheese, or a crumble of feta.
Veg it Up! – try slicing apples or pears, grating beets, grilling eggplant or bell peppers, or roasting sweet potatoes for extra veggie toppings. Then, add some greens like kale, spinach, arugula, sprouts or flavourful herbs like parsley, basil and cilantro.
Go Pro(tein)! – Use lean meats like roasted chicken or turkey, sliced or mashed hard boiled eggs, or fish such as salmon or tuna to add quality protein to your sandwich. Also try plant-based alternatives like grilled tempeh or tofu, mashed beans, chickpeas, or lentils.
